Asante Traditional Buildings

It is gratifying that the Asante Traditional Buildings have been listed National Monuments and more importantly as World Heritage property by UNESCO's World Heritage Committee. These edifices, built by talented "architects", have played their role in the history and culture of Asanteman.Their unique mural decorations were used mostly for palaces, homes for the wealthy citizens and shrine houses. However, the long war with the British at the turn of the twentieth century destroyed most of these buildings and modernity ensured that the rebuilding was in sandcrete blocks and corrugated iron. Ironically, the few that have survived till today are the shrines of some of our powerful deities who have interceded and protected Asanteman. It is important therefore that all attempts are made to preserve this heritage. I congratulate the Ghana Museums and Management Board, the World Heritage Centre of UNESCO, CRATerre-EAG, ICCROM, the French Embassy in Ghana, Novotel, CFAO and ELF, who have taken a lead in this direction.

The book is the outcome of an excellent exhibition, which was mounted at the Alliance Francaise in Kumasi some months ago. It is my hope that this publication will regenerate interest in our traditional architects and also motivate students and researchers towards further development.
