In 2000, the Goethe Institut, in collaboration with the Ghana Institute of Architects, organised an international seminar with the theme Visions of the City: Accra in the 21st Century. The seminar looked ahead into the future of the world's cities and focused on the Accra as a fast growing metropolis in West Africa. The papers presented here were selected out of the various presentations, after a review that found them to be representative of the wide range of academic disciplines and speakers present.
Visions of the City: Accra in the 21st Century followed an earlier collaborations in 1998 between the Goethe Institut and the Ghana Institute of Architects in commemoration of the Cententary of the City of Accra.That seminar had the theme Migration and Urbanisation-Effects on the Planned City , in line with the Global Initiative on Sustainable Development.
Several professionals, government officials and the general public were brought together to have a most useful discoures on the growth and development of some of the world's cities and of Accra in particular as the administrative and commercial capital of Ghana. |
Visions of the City: Accra in the 21st Century tried to examine the experiences of some cities and their developmental challenges and problems. Many broad themes including land use,urban planning ideals,housing,public transport policy, information technology,physical and social infrastructure were discussed. The participation of government and public officials made the seminar the forum it was intended to be in examing policy and developmental issues towards the management of growing cities.
